Meeting Preview: Dave Braine - November 13, 2023

ROANOKE VALLEY SPORTS CLUB PREVIEW

For all of the outstanding athletes, coaches and administrators who have spoken to the Roanoke Valley Sports Club, few have had as wide range as Monday night's speaker, Dave Braine.

Braine, who played football at the University of North Carolina, later served as athletic director at Marshall from 1985-87, Virginia Tech from 1988-97 and Georgia Tech from 1997-2006.

"That was my life for 22 years," he said.

He was an assistant AD at UVa from 1978-83 and at Fresno State from 1983-84.

Braine had grown up in Grove City, Pa., not too far from Pittsburgh or Erie. His coach at Sharon High School was the late Dick Bestwick, who would become the head coach at Virginia, where Braine was on his first staff.

Braine was an assistant football coach at VMI from 1967-70, Richmond from 1971-73, Georgia Tech from 1974-75 and Virginia from 1976-77.

During his term as Virginia Tech's athletic director, he was in charge as the Hokies won nine Atlantic-10 titles.

The event will be held at the Salem Civic Center starting at 5:30 p.m.
