Mike Burnop, Virginia Tech’s Hall of Fame network analyst received a multi-year contract extension prior to the 2015 football season and enters his 40th season in the Hokies’ football booth. Burnop, a former star tight end for the Hokies, still holds the Virginia Tech record for receptions in a season by a tight end with 46.

In November, Roanoke College announced that Bryan Stinespring will be the new head coach for the Maroons football program, which the school is rebuilding after a hiatus of more than 80 years. Stinespring, previously the associate head football coach and offensive assistant at Virginia Military Institute, brings more than 30 years of Virginia coaching experience to the role, including 26 years under legendary coach Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech.
Roanoke College hasn't had a football team since 1942, when it was forced to disband the program because of the constraints of World War II. This summer, Roanoke College announced it had raised $1.3 million to support the return of football and add co-curricular varsity cheerleading and marching band programs.

George Canale is a retired Major League Baseball first baseman and Cave Spring graduate. He played Major League Baseball for three seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers.
George Canale graduated from Cave Spring High School (Roanoke, Virginia) in 1983 and attended Virginia Tech from 1984-1986. During the 1986 season, George Canale hit the most home runs in Division I baseball with 29 home runs. The same year, George was chosen as an All-American first baseman on the 1986 College Baseball All-America Team, which led to his induction to the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.
The Virginia athletics department has named John Freeman as the new “Voice of the Cavaliers.” Freeman takes over as the play-by-play announcer for Virginia football and men’s basketball games on the Virginia Sports Radio Network and other announcing duties including serving as host of the in-season “Coach’s Corner” program.
A native of Crozet, Va., Freeman graduated from Virginia in 2009 with a degree in media studies. He has handled announcing duties for the Virginia Sports Radio Network and UVA streaming platforms since 2006 including fill-in duties for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, wrestling and softball.
George Lynch is serving as head coach of the Clark Atlanta University Panthers men's basketball team. George was born in Roanoke and started at Patrick Henry High School before going on to UNC. Lynch spent 12 years in the NBA after being a first-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1993. A defensive force, Lynch also was the first rookie since Magic Johnson to score 30 points in a game. He played for four NBA teams during his career (L.A. Lakers, Vancouver Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers, and the New Orleans Hornets), playing the NBA Finals with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001. He was also a second-team All-NBA defensive player that year.
Murray Cook’s knowledge and experience has been implemented at sports facilities around the world. He has provided sports venue design and management services in over 30 different countries. Some of his projects include: Major League Baseball’s Official Field Consultant, numerous Olympic and International sports consultations and operations, the Washington Mall and many other major tournaments and facilities.

We will also have a sneak preview of the speaker for our February, 2022 meeting, Salem's own Murray Cook, President of Brightview Sports Turf; Major League Official Field & Turf Consultant, and responsible for the Field of Dreams game this past August.
THIS EVENT IS FREE BUT RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. The event begins with a Social at 5:45 PM (cash bar); dinner begins at 6:15 PM, with the program beginning at 7:00 PM. The night ends with a 50/50 raffle around 8:00 PM.
