Bill Pope is a legendary high school basketball coach in Virginia who retired in March 2026 after 40 years as the head boys basketball coach at Northside High School in Roanoke. Over his 46-year overall coaching career, he amassed an incredible 680 wins and won three state championships.
During his decades leading the Vikings program, Coach Pope established a legacy that ranks among the best in the history of the Virginia High School League (VHSL).
• Career Wins: 680 (6th highest overall win total in VHSL history and 4th highest by a coach at a single school).
• State Championships: 3 VHSL Class 3 titles (2019, 2023, 2024).
• Regional & District Titles: 8 regional championships and 17 district championships.
In recognition of his incredible milestones, Northside High School renamed its main basketball court the "Bill Pope Gym" in 2019 following his first state title. He officially stepped away from the bench in 2026, stating a desire to experience life outside the year-round commitment of running a major basketball program.
